My ID is Gangnam Beauty: What I Like and Least Like
It's been 3 days since it ended and I am still sulking because I just don't want it to end. As other viewers of this drama said, this is one of those happy endings that makes you feel happy and hurt and sad at the same time.
My ID is Gangnam Beauty is originally a webtoon series that has been adapted to TV starring Im Soo-Hyang and Cha Eun-Woo. The story tells about an "ugly" girl who underwent plastic surgery in order to live a normal life after being bullied because of her appearance. The series follows her journey towards learning what true beauty means with the help of Do Kyung Seok, the most popular man in college.
First Impression
I saw some clips of Im Soo Hyang in another drama but never really find it interesting. When the press conference of MIDIGB was all over my newsfeed, my first thoughts were:
1. This is just going to be another typical series.
2. The leading man is handsome.
3. The girl is so-so.
Because these were my thoughts, I didn't bother. Until my KDrama friends talked about how good it is and saw how crazy they went over it, I decided to join the club. And the only time I regretted joining the club was yesterday and only because I am having a hard time moving on.
What I like:
- Cha Eun Woo being so handsome is one thing. Him playing Do Kyung Seok so perfectly is another thing. I like him being cold and naive (when it comes to relationship and Mirae) and his cute subtle declarations of affection and sweet remarks. (Spoiler) My favorite DKS is when Mi Rae told him he's a sweet brother and he said Mi Rae can call him sweetheart. 😂😂
- Soo Hyang may have not caught my attention the first time but she totally convinced me as Kang Mi Rae. Eun Woo mentioned at the press conference that they wanted to deliver a much more solid interpretation of Mi Rae's story than of the webtoon. And they really did. Mi Rae, reached out to her audiences deeply to the point where they can empathize with her truly, and get where she is coming from without having to experience what she went through.
- The first thing I realized was the drama's perspective on sexism. Men objectifying women is so visible in the first few episodes and I loved how the women in the drama stood up and fought their way out of men's criticisms that is much accordingly to the typical standards of the modern society: a girl must be naturally pretty and sexy to be accepted and to belong.
- I hate Soo Ah! I admit I hated Woo Ri too. I hate her character so much... and that means Woo Ri is very effective in her role. And I liked that I hate her.
- Kang MiRae and Do Kyung Seok maybe the main characters and the focus of the story but I loved how the writer managed to highlight each and every characters and their development throughout the series. They're not wallflowers. Each face has a name and I remember them. Balanced.
- Speaking of that, and I'd like to give credits to my MIDIGB friends for speaking my mind, I love how Kang Mi Rae's character developed from timid to bold and Do Kyung Seok from being cold to warm.
- I am pretty sure Atelier Cologne was happy with the drama and I'd say the writer was so impressive with the product placement. It was subtle and not annoying. I loved that the writer made a backstory of why Mi Rae loves perfume. Atelier revolved naturally in the series.
- When most dramas' cat and mouse chase love story gets pretty annoying sometimes, we all understood why Mirae had to reject the gorgeous Do Kyung Seok twice. And we all understood why she confessed eventually. It was a smooth transition. When she have to go through overcoming all her insecurities... Do Kyung Seok patiently waited for her and still loving her in every angle and even when she finally gave in, DKS patiently waited for her to be comfortable and I guess it was worth the wait and it was satisfying when he can finally be the sweetest and cutest boyfriend to Mi Rae. It took a while before we were even given what we wanted... I hear my friends asking "when are they going to date, we're on 12/16?" But we were given 4 episodes full of intoxicating lovey-dovey scenes and sweetness.
- I'm going to add what my friends also said... they liked how the series made a little segue in dealing with mental health.
- CHA EUN WOO AND IM SOO HYANG'S CHEMISTRY IS OOZING! I SHIP THEM HARD.
- And lastly, but of course never the least, were the life lessons the drama reminded us. I'd say they were reminders because seeing the beauty beyond physical appearance has been a cliche and has been taught everyday in our lives in different ways. The drama is the most creative and most wonderful reminder of that lesson. Apart from that, we can also see how our characters went through hardships in adulting, bullying, family issues, sexism, and mental health.

What I least like:
- I wish there could be more Na Hye Sung - Mi Rae - Do Kyung Seok moments. I mean, knowing Kyung Seok's mother is cheering for their relationship, I still wish there were more proofs to that, with Kyung Hee this time.
- They left out Kyung Seok's family issues. Well, that's for me. I'm not satisfied in that aspect of the plot.
- WHY THE HELL IT HAS ONLY 16 EPISODES??? I NEED MORE!
I was supposed to be sharing the life lessons but everyone has been sharing it already... But here's a bonus...
GIRL, NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU ARE.. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEONE FOR YOU WHO WILL LOVE YOU JUST AS WHO YOU ARE. SO CARE LESS AND BE YOU! *wink*
